THE full face DH-405 helmet

Posted: May 11, 2009

Toby Henderson Enterprises (THE) offers their comfortable DH-405 full-face helmet (aka The One) in a variety of styling paintjobs for 2009.

Toby Henderson has been making bike protective gear for several years and the quality has always been a cut above. For 2009, THE offers the DH-405 full face helmet in sizes XS-XL and in both composite and carbon fiber shells. Each material offers 4 individual color schemes, for a total of 8 available paint jobs.

On top of style points in the details, THE has thought of nearly everything else to make the One helmet as comfortable as possible. 15 vents lead in and out of 4 air channels within the helmet to force air through it and keep the wearer cool. The interior printed liner is removable and washable to keep the funk at bay. The helmet even comes with 2 visors so you don't look like 'that guy' when you show up to the ride with duct tape on your bill after your last crash & burn left your visor in pieces.

For a little more money a carbon fiber helmet is lighter than it's composite counterpart. The weave of the carbon is also stronger and more impact resistant. It doesn't hurt that carbon looks good by itself.

This is one of the more comfortable full-face helmets I've worn. In the Medium size, the helmet stays put on my head and doesn't move at all. Fit was initially snug on the jaw bone but after 3-4 sweat baths it has packed out nicely. Peripheral vision is good. About the only thing I don't like about the helmet is the dual d-ring buckle closure. Although d-rings may be the most secure mechanism, they require considerably more time than a plastic snap buckle, which really matters when I'm out shooting photos on a ride. D-rings are metal though so they won't break.

These days it seems like riders are picking helmets for the paintjob. Before you go and order a helmet that may cost multiple hundreds of dollars, try on the exact brand, model, and size you need, whether you have to borrow a friend's greasy lid or just go to a bike shop and buy one. Fit is key; everything else aside. Each manufacturer's molds will fit differently, so don't be totally set on one brand until you've tried some others. Spend some time picking out your lid and it will either last you for several years or potentially save your life.

Composite pricing: $299 CAD/$199 USD MSRP
Carbon pricing: $459 CAD/$299 USD MSRP

THE is distributed by Cycles Lambert in Canada.

wow.. does it really cost that much to bring them into Canada?? and the CAD is like $0.15 away from the USD. I just seems like such a huge difference.

yah for sure and considering there is a distributor right here in canada makes it seem even more unreasonable since its not like you're ordering from the states or something.

Nope, Colleseum... so the best. Looks heaps good in carbon, glad I bought it.

For those considering between TLD and THE, I found TLD D2 helmets had a much skinnier, more oval fit, than the THE helmets, which are slightly more rounded. I bought a D2 Phobia, and it was uncomfortable with my fro like bushy thing on my head, so I bought a THE Colleseum and it was perfect.

However, both brands are sick.

he says it takes longer with the D strap rather than buckle. It dosent if you use it correctly. Its infact faster coz u can just slide it on and off easier and you just pull the strap and its on secure two seconds later

my d2 lucha has a pull tab for opening and i actually find it a lot faster than the clip on my old remedy and bell. with that little a price difference between THE and TLD, and no THE dealers around these parts, i'm more than happy with the d2.

So thats what THE stands for. They are great helmets with nice designs but I dont see anything that sets them apart from the rest of the pack. I would be happy with most fullfaces I think. Its personal preference with comfort etc.

I just got my THE Carbon Electric the other day. Super comfy, super light and with good looks to boot. I think the prices mentioned above are a bit off though. Pretty sure the crabon retails for $578 canadian dollars but I didn't spend that much cuz I got a bit of a deal.

a friend has the scott spectre carbon, 08 model i think, and when i saw it, i realised that it and the THEs had the exact same outward construction. Then shape, the vents, the mouth guard, the cutting of the lids even the padding inside are the same, minus the diff graphics...
